It’s not a secret that Berlin has an event’s agenda that obliges you to have not only one, but at least two Doppelgängers! It’s always a hard task to decide what to do and we also struggle a bit every end of the week. To help you make the best choices, we have started doing a “What to do this weekend guide!”
The highlights for this “What to do this weekend” are the Right the Right festival with the Brazilian jazz genius and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal and his band; Around the World in 14 Films that brings 14 extraordinary films from 14 regions around the world; the Empower/AR, an afro-futurist and queer-feminist festival.
Check out our weekend’s picks!
Flesh and Bone. (Die Party ist over.) with Sammlung Haus N
Flesh and Bone is an exhibition that requires full involvement. Anytime the contemporary body is invoked it is a loaded issue, both the viewer and that artist must dedicate a full engagement with the work for here in this show a kind of militancy is born. In our case, the body is a site for several levels of interpretation: the body as a weapon, the foreign body, the body as Alien, the literary body and the philosophical meanings of the word “the body”. Curators : Loïc Le Gall & Justin Polera.

A beautiful dancepiece with Cie. Toula Limnaios. The french expression »minute papillon«, which roughly translates as “hold on”, expresses a longing for a lightness of being, the search for happiness and the ephemeral state of the human cycle. The stories before, in-between and after, the desire for everything to remain as it is or for everything to change, is embodied by the dancers – like a river and its shores, a foundation and its load.
Days 21, 23, 27, 30, November and 4-7, December, 20:30 – 21:30. Cie. Toula Limnaios. Eberswalder Straße, 10.

KOW presents a selective overview of Léon Ferrari’s influential oeuvre. Even a cursory glance reveals that Ferrari had an axe to grind with the Catholic Church. His most famous and surely most controversial piece, La Civilización Occidental y Cristiana (1965), shows a painted-wood Jesus figure crucified to the replica of an American fighter jet from the Vietnam War. The work got him in trouble with the government, the Vatican, museums, but in the end it prevailed. We present previously unpublished collages from the 1980s which follow on from La Civilizacíon … The works from the cycle Relecturas de la Biblia may provoke strong feelings even today: Nazi terror meets Catholic propaganda, combat tanks and long-range missiles protected by angels, the clergy at the Vatican contemplating the Holocaust as though it were a Last Judgment with God’s blessing, regimes of military and religious power hand in hand in the same picture. A hell on earth—forged of steel tubes, cyanide, and glorioles. “The only thing I ask of art is that it helps me (…) to invent visual and critical signs that let me condemn more efficiently the barbarism of the West.” Léon Ferrari, 1965.
Exhibition opening: 22, November, 18:00 – 22:00. KOW, Lindestraße, 35
