What to do this weekend in Berlin: March 12-15

This “What to do this weekend in Berlin” guide starts with a sad note: in an effort to slow the spread of the corona virus, Berlin banned gatherings of 1,000 people or more and announced the closure of state-run theaters and concert halls until at least April 19th.

Smaller and private venues are not (and hopefully will not be!) forced yet to cancel their programe for the next weeks, but double check them out as the pandemic develops.

Tomoko Hojo Exhibition | Hover Over Man and Woman [CANCELLED]
For the final presentation of her stay at the Kunstquatier Betanien, sound artist Tomoko Hojo focuses on the concept of Japanese woman based on the recording of an actress and a former geisha Sadayakko Kawakami, which was the first audio recording of Japanese conducted in Berlin in 1901. Through researching the emphasized femininity on visual images of Sadayakko and her mistakenly transferred ‘male’ voice in the archive, this show ‘HOVER OVER MAN AND WOMAN’ explores gaps between the fictional desire towards Sadayakko and herself. At the opening night, there is a collaborative performance with Russian sound artist Sergey Kasich, a current music fellow of the Artists-in-Berlin Program by DAAD.

Fortuna Ehrenfeld
Poetry without kitsch. Emotion without calculation. Musical precision without airs and graces. The new album by Fortuna Ehrenfeld: Helm ab zum Gebet sounds so casual and effortless, as if it would be the easiest thing in the world to let your heart burn for pop and poetry to light the fuse on the big wheel of emotion. But apart from the emotions, it also provides a good portion of weirdness and madness. On stage, Fortuna Ehrenfeld appears as a trio (Martin Bechler, Jenny Thiele, Paul Leonard Weißert) in pyjamas and bear paw shoes, producing music from bar ballads to dance beats, from Dada to Weill, from pianissimo to brass band.
