What to do this weekend in Berlin: 27-Feb 1-Mar

This weekend in Berlin brings at least three must-go concerts: Hans-Joachim Roedelius & Arnold Kasar,  Weval with complete band and Ásgeir. Art buffs can’t miss the opening of the first major European retrospective from the Emirati artist Hassan Sharif at KW Institute for Contemporary Art and the collective exhbition 31 Women, opening on Saturday at the Daimler Art Collection. Party-wise, our beloved Klunkerkranich reopens its doors for the next warm months and Theo Parrish, the legendary dance music DJ, plays all night long at Prince Charles on Saturday!

The  napolitan pizza masters of Malafemmena will throw a tasting menu of 6 types of pizzas with different doughs and 1 dessert paired with wines from the Consorzio Vini del Vesuvio DOC.

Falkenrot Prize 2020

Der Nino aus Wien
In the 2020 Germany tour, Nino Mandl and his band will be performing his current album “Der Nino aus Wien”, the most personal and intimist in Nino’s career. The lyrics take time to build their way into the listener and become more and more apparent over time. Support Sigrid Horn.

YEAH BUT NO – Berlin
Yeah but no is the Berliner duo Douglas Greed and Fabian Kuss. Merging electronic music with classic song structures into a clever and captivating listening experience, they will release their second album “Demons”.

Amplify Berlin
Each month, Berlin-based emerging musicians have the chance to be mentored in composition, production and live performance by established musicians. The fifteenth edition of the creative development program features mentor Sasha Perera and sets from mentees Bonka & Shannon Sea.

Hans-Joachim Roedelius & Arnold Kasar
With delicate piano themes and atmospheric electronic sounds, Hans-Joachim Roedelius & Arnold Kasar develop a unique chemistry. Roedelius is one of the forefathers of Kosmische Musik and Krautrock. Arnold Kasar is almost thirty years younger than Roedelius, he is a child of Berlin´s crossover scene of the 1990s. He broke the line between electronic dance music and jazz and responds in the most immediate fashion to Roedelius’ piano play using his electronic instruments.

O MATO: Mellow Thursday
Livingroom vibes, afterwork drinks and colourful soundscapes!  Following the desire of getting together and enjoy music other than in a nightclub, they invited their favorite local selectors, who will share their research with us. Whether it be tropical flavoured jazz-funk, funk infused library, soulful breaks or anything in between, you can expect the unexpected.

Finally Klunkerkranich is opening Season 2020 with Heval Trio, Zigan Aldi, and others. Kamai Music is a Berlin based label for organic dance music. We’re waiting for a nice sunset on this Friday in our favorite rooftop in town.

Opening: Hassan Sharif
KW Institute for Contemporary Art will present the first major retrospective of the Emirati artist Hassan Sharif (1951–2016) in Europe. Sharif, who lived and worked in Dubai, was one of the most influential artists from the Middle East of the twentieth century. He is considered a leading pioneer of Conceptual Art and of new experimental artistic approaches that reconceive a conventional understanding of time, space, form, and social interaction, and which continue to resonate significantly with the younger generation to this day.

Kolektif Berlin Bike Fair 2020
The independent bike expo, bike market, bike convention with no rules or guidelines will kick off this Friday! Visitors get in for „Pay what you wish“ and are more than welcome. There will be more than 70 small labels from all over Europe, bike crews, bigger brands and players, coffee, cake, food trucks, a bike market and visitors get in for „Pay what you wish“!

Buttcocks meets Plastic
The two party crews will take over the three SchwuZ dancefloors for a queer celebration of popculture with pop, house, techno and drag performances, including Jacky-Oh Weinhaus, Prosumer, Gieza Poke, and many others.

New Growth
With New Growth, dancer and performer Nasheeka Nedsreal brings the multi-stranded, multi-knotted network of power to the stage. The performance begins with an interview, for which appearance is everything. What is the significance of hairstyle — especially for a woman of colour? Individual expression? Conformity to the expectations of others?

Architectuul Tour: IBA 1987
During a two-hour walk, we’ll travel back to Berlin of the 1980s: the times when city, cut in half by a wall, with decaying central neighborhoods and persistent shortage of well built public housing, was in need of bold, but careful strokes. For a decade starting in 1977, Southern Friedrichstadt was one of the sites of the international building exhibition known as IBA 1987, to which architects from around the world were invited to envision and build publicly funded residential projects.

Psychedelic Breath / Berlin Class
What will you experience? Psychedelic Breath is Eva Kaczor’s own mix of breathing techniques that combine elements from ancient yoga traditions and findings of contemporary neuroscience. Within the breath meditation you alter your brain frequencies into deeper states of meditation. Touching upon your subconscious mind as well as your emotional body, you might clear out mental, emotional and physical blockages.

31:Women Vernissage
Taking as reference the “Exhibition by 31 Women”, that happened in 1943 in New York, focused exclusively on female avant-garde artists, the exhibition 31: Women shows women artists from the Daimler Art Collection. Historically, the exhibition begins in the 1930s with abstract paintings by the Hungarian artist Anne Beöthy Steiner. From here, the horizon expands from European and American trends from Zero and Minimalism to contemporary German and international positions in the media of image, photography, installation, sculpture, drawing and video.

Boulez Ensemble & François-Xavier Roth
François-Xavier Roth has been closely associated with the Boulez Ensemble ever since the opening of the Pierre Boulez Saal in March 2017. The first of their two joint programs this season is dedicated entirely to the music of Boulez. In addition to the early, groundbreaking Sonatina for Flute and Piano and Messagesquisse, a 1976 birthday greeting for Paul Sacher, another of the composer’s fascinating scores will be heard for the first time in “his” hall: the unfinished double work Éclat/Multiples, written between 1966 and 1970.

Ásgeir is coming to Germany for two shows to present his new album “Bury the moon”.  In 2012, Ásgeir’s acclaimed debut “Dýrð í permanðaþögn” was released and initially made him a legend in his homeland Iceland. It became Iceland’s fastest-selling domestic debut album, broke all records, and even eclipsed Björk and Sigur Ros’s sales figures – statistically there is a copy in every tenth Icelandic household.

Metropolis (OmeU) Live
The classic German movie will be on the screen of the Babylon with live music performed by their own Babylon Orchester.

Ich hör dauernd Hühner #6 
The 6th edition of Ich hör dauernd Hühner brings to West Germany the duo from Hamburg Schluss, with their adventurous spontaneous music. Also Joke Lanz & Mat Pogo with a noisy and humorous underground attitude with one of the most exciting voice and noise acts in Berlin. While Marcello S. Busato comes from the improv scene from Berlin, so wait for a dive into experimental music, free jazz and strange noises. Just to end with the weirdness of Güllepumpe.

DJ-Battle Lippok Bros vs Nicolai Bros
4 turntables, 2 mixer, 1 dancefloor, 1 jury, 1 price In the last part of our series in collaboration with the Freunde Guter Musik Berlin e.V., four musical rivals battle in Cevdet Erek’s installation “Bergama Stereo” on Saturday: The brothers Lippok and Nicolai meet in an epic DJ-Battle Lippok Bros vs Nicolai Bros. Only the jury can decide who wins. The DJ Battle takes place in celebration of 20 years of “Musikwerke Bildender Künstler”.

Vingerhoets aka Vamilienfa†er of the Berlin experimental label bohemian drips.The event focuses on Ambient and Soft-Experimental Music, showcasing the works of artists of the Berlin Ambient & Experimental Music Scene in a cozy & comfortable setting. Comprised of the dramas Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box, Wedekind’s play has had a remarkably rocky creation, production and reception history: re-writes, private performances, bans, and re-worked into the drama Lulu in the end. The title character has served as the inspiration for films both silent and talkie, an opera by Alban Berg, a transposition by Robert Wilson with music by Lou Reed, a first performance of the original text in 1988 directed by Peter Zadek in Hamburg.

Weval with full band
The two band members of Weval, Harm and Merijn got their start in the film industry, which is where they met in 2010. When they found out they shared the same love for creating electronic music, they decided to team up. Brimming with powerful synt hooks, rousing rythmic patterns and expertly juxtaposed intensities, Weval’s music lends itself rather well to a live setting. Harm and Merijn successfully adapt their intimate sound cosmos to active dance floors, bringing a heady vibe and lots of flexing bass to clubs and festivals all over Europe.
