Dolores California Burritos has been, for a long time, the go-to burrito place for most expats in the city. In a city like Berlin, where a great Mexican meal is still hard to come by, we do feel some comfort in knowing that we can count on Dolores and a couple of other places to satisfy our Mexican/Tex-Mex cravings.
Dolores is centrally located on a back street off the Alexanderplatz area. To get here, your best option is to head to Alexanderplatz and walk 5 minutes. Apparently there is a second location on Wittenbergplatz in Charlottenburg, but we have yet to try that location. We heard good things, though.
The ambiance is mega casual, as it should be. It’s a burrito joint, after all. We like the drawings of San Francisco’s city maps on the walls. I guess the whole idea is that the place would transport you to one of the burrito joints you would find at the Mission/Dolores districts in San Francisco. Well…not quite…but we still like it.
The menu, you guessed it, centers around burritos and burritos bowls. That said, there are quite a few options of quesadillas, tacos, chips, salads, salsas and all things tex-mex. We always stick to the burrito options, though. And we have not been disappointed. We always go for either the naughty pork or the wicked beef. And we ask for extra habanero sauce, cilantro and lime (critical, in our opinion)!
Lunch time is super busy and you may encounter long lines. The crowd is young and a mix of locals and burrito-nostalgic-expats.
Explore the area away from Alexanderplatz, between Dolores and Hackescher Markt. It is an are full of cool designer brands and hip stores. Otherwise follow the train tracks and check out some street art between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt stations.
