Berlin has, it seams, millions of Indian restaurants. It is, however, somewhat hard to find true great Indian grub. We were super excited when we heard the buzz around Chutnify South Indian Street Food. We even waited a little to see if the buzz would die down…it didn’t. This place is rapidly becoming a destination and reference for decent Indian food in the city.
Chutnify is located along a leafy and atmospheric street in Prenzlauer Berg (just north of cute Kollwitzplatz). To get here, take the U-Bahn to Senenfelderplatz Station (U8) and walk along Kollwitzstrasse until you hit Sredzkistrasse. It is a quite pleasant walk.
We absolutely love the Indian somewhat kitsch design elements and the somewhat shabby interior. Colourful, fun and absolutely cool. During the warmer months, make sure to grab a table outside/outfront, but make sure to check out the interior as it does add to the experience. And yes, it is a casual place, so don’t even worry about what to wear. Just go as you please. The atmosphere is upbeat, non pretentious. At night it can get quite busy, so make sure to make a reservation.
The menu centers around Dosas (crépe-like wraps with Indian goodness inside) plus a selection of chutneys. There are also other options on the menu, like salads, “uttapam” (sometimes called Indian pizza), rice bowls and idli rice patties. We are still working our way through the menu, but all we have had here has been yummy. The simple and crispy (Sigh) “Keema Mattar Dosa” has won our hearts, though.
This area in Prenzlauer Berg is super pleasant and full of nice neighbourhood bars. If you are here during the day, explore the neighbourhood. However, if you happen to come here for dinner, make sure to hit one of the bars around Helmholzplatz (like Bryk) or walk back along Kollwitzstrasse and hit Scotch & Sofa.
