Having good food for dinner is always fun. Couple that with dining inside a former electricity substation built back in 1928 (hence the name of the restaurant). The experience is complete. We had heard good things about VOLT SEASONAL GERMAN CUISINE and were curious to try it. And we wish we had come here sooner. We will definitely go back.
This place has gotten very popular, very quickly. Sometimes that will put off some of the Berlin foodies (especially if it is well rated on TripAdvisor). Not us. We believe cool spaces and dining options should be shared and enjoyed by all. Yes, that means sometimes sitting by someone with their Berlin guide/map folded on the table. That should not deter you from enjoying the food and this awesome space.
Volt is located along Paul-Lincke Ufer in Kreuzberg. This area along the Landwehrkanal is one of our favourite stretches in Berlin. If you get a chance, try coming here during the day as well. The Turkish market takes place on the other side of the canal twice a week and on weekends there are often street fairs. Make sure to stop for coffee at Concierge Coffee.
Once you get to Volt, you will be in awe of the building itself. The experience gets that much more interesting when you realize that the space has been immaculately designed with striking industrial elements. We particularly love the light fixtures and the way they take over the space. WOW! The high ceilings and dimensions complete the “wow factor”. It feels super current, super cool and funky at the same time.
The locally sourced and seasonal menu by Chef Matthias Gleiß reinterprets traditional German and Berlin dishes. It feels super fresh and absolutely well balanced. There is the option of ordering à la Carte or going for the fixed menu (2 menu options). We went for the fixed menu options and were not disappointed. Plentiful, beautiful and tasty. There is quite a selection of wines. Ask the staff for German wine recommendations. You are in Germany after all!
Service was impeccable which already sets it apart from most traditional restaurants around Berlin.
WHAT TO ORDER AT VOLT SEASONAL GERMAN CUISINE: Go for one of the set menus (varies according to season). The dish sequence is superbly thought through and beautifully presented.
