(THIS RESTAURANT HAS RECENTLY CLOSED FOR “RENNOVATIONS” – Word has it it might not reopen – visit their website for any updates). Industry Standard is one of the hot places to eat and have a good time with friends. It is located in the most exciting and funky neighbourhood in Berlin at the moment, Neukölln. IS really seems to have embraced it and opened the restaurant along Sonnenallee, an Avenue full of kebab joints, sketchy casinos, Arab goods stores and a couple of funky cafés. And we must say, it does add to the overall experience. AND you can even watch the kitchen action from the street.Do not be fooled, though. Industry Standard brings the average Neukölln food scene a couple of levels up. Both in terms of quality and price. Mind you, most places that have opened in this part of town in the past couple of years have been on the lower range of the scale.
The menu at Industry Standard is relatively short, to the point and focuses on simple high quality food and beverages. We would classify their style as “modern bistro” but that is probably doing them a disservice. The food made here goes beyond that. Although it is not a tapas concept place, we would definitely recommend a “family style” experience, where the table orders a few different dishes and shares them all. If you are by yourself, take a place at the bar. You are sure to make new friends. As menu highlights, we all agreed that their steak tartar version shined bright. The pork belly and the Scotch Egg were also very tasty. And don’t forget to explore their drinks menu…it is also quite exciting.
All that said, what really struck a cord with us was how wonderful the atmosphere and energy of this place felt. Busy, but not crazy. The crowd tends to veer towards the cool locals but not to the point anyone would feel out of place. The design is cool, inviting and casual. Here, it is all about the atmosphere. Soak up on it!
**Industry Standard has started serving Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays as of September 2015. Make sure to try it! Don’t forget to make reservations. And go for either the Chilaquiles or the Scotch Egg Sandwich. Both amazing!
There are no shortage of bars and clubs to explore after a nice dinner at Industry Standard. If you feel like dancing, we definitely recommend a stop at Schwuz . Yes, it is a gay nightclub (a super cool one), but even if you are not gay, we think it is a great place to take the party after Industry Standard.
What we like to order at Industry Standard: Steak Tartar (their funky delicious version).
