Who said authentic Vietnamese coffee and food must be found at dodgy joints? Let’s be frank. That used to be the case. But not for a while in Berlin. Places like Quà Phê are bringing a cool vibe and variation to the already established Vietnamese food scene. True, places like Monsieur Vuong and District Môt have been around and successfully so. But Quà Phê is a little different.
From the outside (the building is hardly interesting) it is hard to understand how well designed and beautiful this place is. Once you get your foot in the door it is as if you have been transported to a super cool Vietnamese coffee bar in Central Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Yes, we said cool. The design mixes Vietnamese and industrial elements in a super harmonious way. Check out the communal tables and the lamps. Gorgeous. There is a nice outside seating area for the warmer months.
The menu offers a fun and delightful selection of Vietnamese Small Plates like Bánh Giò (Steamed Pyramid Dumpling), Bánh Bao (buns filled with veggies, tofu, braised pork or sausage, among others), Pho Cuon (Rice crépes also with various fillings). The sticky rice dessert with coconut shavings is quite interesting. Naturally they also serve very good coffee prepared to your taste. Whether you like it Vietnamese style or your usual flat white.
Quà Phê is perfect for a light meal or an afternoon coffee. Every bite we’ve had here reminded us of our adventures in Vietnam.
Make sure to explore the über cool Rosenthaler Strasse/Münztrasse area afterwards. Stop by IC! Berlin on Max-Beer Strasse 62. It is one of the coolest glassware stores I have ever seen.
