THE BARN COFFEE ROASTERS was our first contact with the Berlin Third Wave Coffee scene. And to this day it is still one of our favorites. They have two stores. The original tiny and incredibly cosy and cute coffee shop on the corner of Augustrasse and Grosse Hamburger Strasse and its Big Brother, the very cool and spacious roastery in Prenzlauer Berg right by Platoon Kunsthalle (an event/art space built from stacked containers).
It is clear that these guys are coffee experts and have a passion for high quality products. Not only do they focus on direct trading and support local producers but they also offer 4 different methods of brewing (do not ask us what these really mean). And they filter their water by a reverse osmosis system. Wow! These guys are overachievers!
The deli counter always has delicious options. Even though they make seasonal changes and you can always find something new, we think that the moist and spicy carrot cake is unbeatable.
They do have a “no laptop” and “no stroller” policy. We believe they are trying to create a quiet and chill environment where people can interact and enjoy their coffee. So if you have high energy babies (children are welcome but only if they are well behaved, i.e. a very small percentage of them) and/or really need to use your laptop, this is not the place for you. Otherwise it can be a great place for a coffee break or to meet friends.
Update: The Barn has just opened a new outpost on the West Side. The location is at an inconic West Berlin corner building (Café Kanzler). Check out the map below!
