It’s Berlin Gay Pride Time! And we have the round up of all the relevant and fun festivals, events and parties that surround it this year. Enjoy the Berlin Gay Pride (CSD) and our guide to the events and best parties!
There is no question that Berlin is one of the friendliest LGBTQ+ cities in Europe. And this year, the Berlin Gay Pride celebrations will be even more especial: It’s the 50th anniversary of the New York Stonewall riots of June 28th, 1969, that launched the gay rights movement.
The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous and violent demonstrations by members of the gay (LGBT) community against a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28th, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn bar in the Greenwich Village in New York. They are widely considered to constitute the most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States and then in the world.
In Berlin, the Gay Pride is traditionally celebrated on the last Saturday of July on the Christopher Street Day parade (named after Christopher Street, where the Stonewall Inn was located in New York), hence its official name: CSD Berlin.
The celebrations start one weekend before the official Pride date. On the 20th and 21st of July, the 27th edition of the Lebisch und Schwulles Stadtfest, also known as Motzfest, takes the area around Nollendorfplatz, in Schöneberg. It’s a big festival with food/drink stalls, handicraft souvenirs, NGO’s, political parties and – of course – DJs and musical acts. The Motzfest afterparty (on Sunday) will be powered by GMF Berlin at Ritter Butzke and starts at 22:00!
The Thursday (July 25th) before the CSD weekend, 16 (!) ships in all rainbow colors will cruise the Spree for the CSD auf der Spree. Get your boarding pass ready!
On the next Friday, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the Berlin Pride Voguing Ball starts at 17:00, at the beautiful Säälchen theater, inspired by the colors of the rainbow flags. Pick your favorite color and go in drag!
The Dyke March Berlin takes center stage on Friday, July 26th! The girls and friends will start marching at 19:00 on Liebigstrasse/Rigaer Strasse in Friedrichshain and will end at Südblock (Kottbusser Tor area). This year, the march will have the always powerful presence of Dykes on Bikes and promises to be the biggest Dyke March Berlin yet!
After walking the Dyke March on Friday evening, the 3 queer-feminist collectives (Room 4 Resistance x Lecken x mina) will be throwing a 24h party – CSD Reclaim – in the ballroom, the bunker and the lush garden of Polygon!
On the 27th, the Berlin Gay Pride, also called CSD (Christopher Street Day), is the biggest annual gay event in Berlin. It gathers hundreds of thousands of people during the whole day. The Berlin Pride is actually composed of two parts: the Pride march (CSD Demo) and a big final rally (CSD Finale), both on Saturday.
The demonstration/march starts at 12:00, on the corner of Kurfürstendamm and Joachimsthaler Strasse and goes in the direction of Nollendorfplatz. It then passes by the Siegessäule (Victory Column), continues along the Strasse des 17. Juni and finishes at the Brandenburg Gate. The access to the march is open, making it possible to join in at any point.
Open from 16:00, the final rally takes place in front of the Brandenburg Gate. There will be bands, acts and DJs performing on the main stage and also DJs playing on the sound cars along the Strasse des 17. Juni.
As a counter-demonstration of the mainstream Berlin Gay Pride Parade, the Radical Queer March Berlin 2019 will happen just after the official march. It starts at Mariannenplatz in Kreuzberg and ends in Friedrichshain. They refer to their big sister parade as “structures and institutions that are pillars of a neoliberal-capitalist, hetero-cis-normative and racist systems that primarily integrates queer subjects into its own privilege structures when they are as white as possible, cis and bourgeois adapted, and are suitable for constructing a homophobic, racist-marked individual as deviant others of a supposedly liberal and enlightened, western-modern society.” Expect a lot of political acts along their march!
On to the Berlin Gay Pride parties!
For those who are just interested in parties (nothing wrong with that, ok?), there will be options to please us all. The opening party, on Friday 26th, is REVOLVER – Berlin Pride Opening Party (FRI). The party will take place at KitKatClub, offering techno music in three floors. There is no dress code and the coatcheck is free. So, undress to impress!
On Saturday 27th, Unity is the official Berlin Pride 2019’s main party. Taking over Ritter Butzke, with more than five areas and an open air area, DJs will provide a variety of music styles, like house, electro, techno, pop and hip hop, that will certainly please (almost) every taste.
Afterpride w/ Same Bitches x Buttons x Herrensauna x Honcho promises “a natural symbiosis of a sick 4some and complete take over at Köpenickerstr. 70”. Jeez!
On Sunday 28th, the London disco crew Horse Meat Disco will do their début at the Berlin Gay Pride week! Horse Meat Disco is one of our favorites parties in Berlin, just because it’s queer for everyone: The crowd is as diverse as it gets! Homos and heteros, club kids, bears, fashionistas, naturists, guerilla drag queens and ladies who munch. But all of this wouldn’t be enough if the glittering selection of classics – italo disco, house, oddities, Afro, punk funk – wouldn’t result in top-notch disco sets!
For this very first time at the Berlin Gay Pride, the party will start at 12:00 (NOON!) at Else, one of the coolest open air party locations, and will host the residents James Hillard and Luke Howard, the local Daniel Wang, (Miss)Kittin, Wes Baggaley, Michelle Manetti and Oren Marzam. Needless to say: That’s where you will find us proudly boogieing on the dance floor!
Happy Pride everyone!
