Here we go!
Berlin is over 9 times the size of Paris, BUT it only has 1/5 of Paris’ density (4K inhabitants per square Km as opposed to 21K inhabitants per square Km in Paris). That’s why Berlin feels so airy and spacious! So much so that sometimes you feel like you have a whole park for yourself.
Berlin has more bridges than Venice – around 1,700 of them. It is also said that Berlin has more waterways than Amsterdam, Stockholm and Venice COMBINED. The most famous and instagrammed bridge is the Oberbaumbrücke between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain.
Did you know that there are 9 castles in Berlin? Most people just visit Schloss Charlottenburg. Köpenicker Schloss, Schloss Schönhausen and six former “mansions” are commonly referred to as Schösschen (little castles). If we add the castles around city limits, including the ones in Potsdam, Oranienburg, etc…the number goes way up!
Berliner Weiße (Berlin White)
Berlin has its own beer specialty, the Berliner Weiße. It has definitely slightly bitter and sour notes and is made from wheat. For the longest time, this beer sort was forgotten, however it has recently had a comeback. There are quite a few local and regional brewers embrassing it again. I love it! Tip: do NOT order a “Weiße mit Schuss” (with a shot), a local wacky tradition. Basically a Weiße beer served with a shot of raspberry or woodruff syrup. Ewwww….
Berlin is home to 3 world class and active Opera Houses, which can accommodate over 4,400 opera attendees. No other city in the world comes close to that. On top of that, Berlin has over 150 theaters and halls for every type of event.
Berlin Subway systems’ (SBahn and UBahn) combined length equals 473Km. Add another 120Km of tram lines and you have one of the most impressive public transportation systems in the world. Especially when you compare it with famous subway systems like Paris (214Km) and London (400Km). AND it feels a lot less crowded than most big cities.
