Würgeengel bar has won a special place in our hearts. This very atmospheric bar is located in one of our favourite corners of Kreuzberg, Dresdener Strasse. Just hop off the subway at Kottbusser Tor Station and walk through (or around) the giant white and yellow building full of satellite dishes. Walk 3 minutes and you’ll arrive at this Kreuzberg institution.
The name of this precious bar (Würgeengel) is a direct reference to a Luis Buñuel movie (El Angel Exterminador). It tells a story about dinner guests that experience a “force” that doesn’t allow them to leave the table. Well, this Kreuzberg bar has had the same effect on us. Every time we come here, we just can’t manage to leave. Except here the force that keeps us, comes from its cool atmosphere, the super friendly staff and the expertly mixed cocktails.
The atmosphere is all you expect from a true Berlin bar. The dark wood elements, leather booths, glass-latticed ceiling and the deliciously moody lighting scheme unite to create a super cozy space. The crowd is mixed, non-pretencious and always interesting. It’s full of smoke. And even if you have a resistance to smoky bars (which will make your bar hopping life in Berlin a tough one), you should give this place a try. And guess what? You’re bound to come back. Have a sample of our last visit here by watching this 15 second video.
The fine menu respectfully covers classic long drinks, cocktails, spirits, wine and beer. They also have a tapas and snacks selection, but we have to admit we have yet to try the food. We’ve heard good things, though.
Address: Dresdener Str. 122 Berlin
