Street art is at the heart of Berlin street culture. You probably know that by now. Beyond our favorite amazing murals you can find around town, there are quite a few spots that offer the street art lover (or curious) the opportunity to explore and discover new street art media, formats and perspectives. Paste ups, poster art, sculptures, sticker art, graffiti, stencil art, you name it, you can probably find all that by going on a STREET ART WALK ALONG DIRCKSENSTRASSE.
Famous and unknown artists share the same space under the train tracks and deliver a unique and fun experience. In the end, it really doesn’t matter who is who. Street art is supposed to be democratic. What matters is that you enjoy their art, take pictures and take home fun memories of the time you did a STREET ART WALK ALONG DIRCKSENSTRASSE.
Start your walk just off Hackescher Markt S-bahn Station in Mitte and make your way along Dircksenstrasse until you hit Alexanderplatz. Just follow the train tracks. If and when you find the underpasses, explore them as well. It is a relatively short walk (about 750 meters) but we can literally spend hours here.
Take your time, observe the details. Look twice or more, you will notice new details and new art interventions the longer you look. Another thing we love to do during this walk is to observe the old iron and brick structural details under the train tracks. If you are lucky, you may find a door open here and there…don’t be shy, take a look inside. Otherwise, just enjoy the covered street art exterior walls.
We usually do this walk at least every 6 months. And every time we see quite a few new art pieces. We love how it changes as time goes by. After all, street art is supposed to be transitory. If someone paints over it, pastes over it, takes it home, draws over it…it is fine. That’s the spirit of street art. And we love it.
If you are hungry after your walk, why not have a Burrito with beer at Dolores. If you are craving that beautiful local craft beer, walk back towards Hackescher Markt and get inside the atmospheric Brauhaus Lemcke (enjoy the backyard during the warmer months).
