The pop up concept has, for a while, completely taken over Berlin. We absolutely love it. The Pop Up concept comes from the US and was initially confined to retail spaces, but it is no longer the case. There is pop up everything, really. Restaurants, stores, exhibitions, etc.
“A pop-up space is a venue that is temporary: the space could be a sample sale one day and host a dinner party the next evening. The trend involves “popping up” one day, then disappearing anywhere from one day to several weeks later. These spaces, while small and temporary, can build up interest by consumer exposure.” (Source: Wikipedia).
If you are exploring Berlin, we highly recommend looking for a BERLIN POPUP DINING EXPERIENCE. We are obsessed with how these experiences can be unique, intimate, surprising, special and quirky. SO BERLIN!
There are quite a few chefs that have not yet opened their restaurants and use the pop up concept to learn, test, take risks as they build interest and create a buzz. We simply can’t get enough of these! Often you get to interact and connect with the chefs as well as other guests. Be open to surprises and new sensations as well as making new friends. The better pop up dining experiences are highly social. Some of them will take place in a restaurant setting while others will partner with bars, event or art spaces (why not?).
Here are our top picks for some of the current exciting pop up dining experiences in Berlin. There are hundreds of those experiences happening all the time, however, we feel these are the ones truly worth a visit. We will review this list regularly as these spaces come and go and new ones pop up. Please refer to the pop up websites for specific dates and menus. Space is limited (usually groups of 12-20 people) so make sure to plan in advance.
**All of our top picks have gone to open permanent locations and are now successful restaurant owners. Stay tuned for our next pop up dining article coming soon! In the meantime, please check our AGENDA for some current pop up dining experiences.
LODE & STIJN (since then, these amazing guys have opened their own restaurant)
Dutch duo puts out one of the most unique and exciting dining experiences in town. They mix Dutch and other European food concepts/flavours and elevate them with fresh and local produce. Lode & Stijn cook with their hearts and one can certainly feel it when savouring their food. Can you imagine blood sausage and smoked trout together? AMAZING!
THE PIT TEXAS BARBECUE (The Pit has recently opened their own restaurant!)
Adam, a Dallas native, only uses very special meat pieces/cuts, salt, pepper and smoke. And let us tell you. The result is to die for. The moist and melting meat is one of the most flavourful we have ever had in Berlin. The Wagyu “Bone In Chuck Roll” is YUMMY!
Chicha runs a food stand at some of Berlin’s Street Food Markets. They serve up some of the most DELICIOUS Peruvian dishes in town. Before they open their restaurant, they are regularly coming up with special pop ups. Chef Ariel Peralta definitely delivers authentic and fresh Peruvian flavours. UPDATE: Chicha just announced that they will soon open their restaurant. Therefore, they will for the time being, not hold pop up dinners. Keep following them.
