The Boros Art Collection is a “must visit” for contemporary art enthusiasts visiting Berlin. We notice many tourists walking by this bunker along Reinhardtstrasse in Mitte. They often seemed curious and confused. Perhaps they don’t realise that insidethat bunker lies an amazing contemporary private art collection.
First of all, how cool is this!? Inside a bunker. A bunker with some interesting history. During the war it was used to shelter thousands of train passengers. After the war it was used as a prisoner-of-war camp. After 1949 it was used to store textiles. Later on it served as storage for dry and tropical fruit. After the fall of the wall it was transformed into a hardcore techno club.
In 2003 the bunker was purchased and fully converted by Christian Boros for his private art collection. It is now a 3,000 m2 exhibition space. Christian Boros and his family now live in the penthouse atop the bunker. It contains groups of works by international artists from 1990 to the present. All spread over 80 rooms. It is truly a fantastic space to visit.
The rich and famous often come here so your tour mates could be the likes of Kate Blanchett or Tom Hanks. Just kidding. We imagine they probably go on a private tour. In any case…they do come here. : )
The exhibited artworks rotate every 4 years as the bunker is not big enough to showcase the whole collection at once. The artists presented at this space are truly top notch. Names like Olafur Eliasson, Ai Wei Wei, Wolfgang Tilmans, Sarah Lucas among many others are featured in the collection. If you don’t know who these people are, don’t worry. This visit can be your “induction” into the Contemporary Art World. The current exhibit has 130 works by 23 amazing artists. We cannot stress enough. If you an art lover, you simply must come here.
You can only visit the space from Thursday to Sunday, accompanied by one of the in-house guides. Groups are generally small (12 people) and fill up early. Reservations are a must. And in the warmer months (with more tourists in town) you must do it way in advance! Tours are available in English and German.
