Yes, you read it write. I am recommending a Neapolitan Pizza Place in Berlin. Surprised? Actually, Berlin has quite a solid Italian food scene. One that keeps getting better and better. So it is no surprise that one can easily find decent Italian places to enjoy. Zola Neapolitan Pizza, however, is a cut above the norm.
Let’s start with the location in Kreuzberg. Zola is hidden in one of those magical courtyards that only Berlin has. Take the subway to either Kottbusser Tor or Schönlein Strasse Stations and walk about 5 minutes along Paul-Lincke-Ufer, a super atmospheric multi-culti street along the Landwehrkanal. Once you get to number 39-40, enter the building through the courtyard, pass the amazing and tiny Concierge Coffee, one of our favorite third wave coffee places in town. In fact, before or after you go to Zola Neapolitan Pizza, make sure to explore every single courtyard along the street (the ones you can get through, at least).
The tall ceilings, the industrial and yet cozy design and the kitchen with a dominating wood fire oven work together to provide a welcoming, casual, spacious and super comfortable atmosphere. Don’t miss the cool blue tinted floors in the main room.
The pizza menu is straight forward and focuses on a few delightful options. As it should. The ingredients are beautiful and fresh and the dough….oh the dough. I loved the dough so much I could just eat it without the toppings. Well, but the toppings are just as amazing, so we will “settle” for having this delectable “ensemble”. From the traditional Margherita to the slightly spicy and delicious Spinata you are totally guaranteed a great meal here.
After your amazing meal, make sure to sample some of Concierge Coffee’s beautiful coffee drinks next door. And if you happen to be here on a Tuesday or Friday (during the day), make sure to visit the Turkish Market, across the Canal. It is a treat!
