Whenever we catch ourselves going for the amazing contemporary/modern art exhibitions at Hamburger Bahnhof (Museum of Contemporary Art – a former Train Station in Mitte), we simply have to stop by this place. SARAH WIENER CAFÉ HAMBURGER BAHNHOF is a great German/Austrian style Café and Restaurant option if you are around this part of town. Sarah Wiener gets a lot of crap because she is not only a Chef, but also a TV celebrity/business woman. We don’t judge. The food this restaurant serves is consistently solid. And we LOVE the location. And it’s just a 5 minute walk from the main train station (Hauptbahnhof).
The proudly bio-certified and seasonal menu takes classic German/Austrian specialties and give them a lighter, modern twist. Our all time favourite here is the Wiener Schnitzel. Lightly crumbled and fried, super tender organic veal with sweet cranberry sauce. Topped with a sprinkle of salt flakes.
There are alway delicious seasonal options to choose from, though. Recently I ordered a “3 times pumpkin” dish that was absolutely delicious. The dessert menu is also solid, but we always end up ordering tarts and cakes from the Café area…they are delicious. Breakfast and brunch is also served here, but we still have to try the savoury breakfast dishes. That said, if you are looking for coffee and cake, you are sure to be satisfied.
During the warmer months make sure to enjoy your coffee, cake and/or meal outside by the canal. It is truly an urban oasis. SARAH WIENER CAFÉ HAMBURGER BAHNHOF sometimes serves dinner (on Fridays). However, we recommend checking their website for updates.
And, of course, if you are here you might as well enjoy one of the most exciting contemporary art spaces in town. Either before or after your meal.
