For the longest time we have been a fan of the area just North of Torstrasse in Mitte (and we are not the only ones). It is a haven of quietness in very close proximity to busy and cool areas of Berlin Mitte. And Bergstrasse (the street where this coffee shop is located) is certainly one of the quaintest and cosiest of this “kiez” (the word used by Berliners to describe one’s immediate neighbourhood).
Distrikt Coffee’s design has a clear industrial feel to it. Brick walls, wood, iron, leather and a cool lighting scheme are all purposefully and successfully used to make one feel comfortable. We wish we would have brought a book along. It is just that inviting.
Apparently they have extra space they would like to use for events, tastings, etc…however we did not get a chance to explore it yet. Will report on that at a later time.
The coffee and pastries/cakes are carefully prepared and served by a super friendly staff. Our “flat white” was super frothy and had a punch to it (just the way we like it). We also tried a slice of the carrot cake. It was very good and satisfying. You do get a sense that these guys are putting lots of love into what they serve.
At the time of this post the coffee shop had only recently opened. We hope they keep up the great work. **Most recently we went back for brunch and had a chance to sample some of the savory dishes. We were really hoping for a similar experience we had with the coffee and cake. Unfortunately we have to report that although tasty, their breakfast dishes are just that. Good. Not great.
After (or before) your stop here, make sure to explore this very atmospheric part of Mitte with galleries, cute shops and super interesting inner courtyards.
